Protocols like Akash, Golem, and the Internet Computer offer permissionless, verifiable compute that is not tied to any single balance sheet. Their economics are transparent on-chain. Their capacity is distributed across thousands of independent providers. Their debt is not structured through CDS indices — it is programmed into smart contracts that settle in real time. The CDS spike is a vindication of the decentralization thesis: that the monopoly on compute is a single point of failure, and that the market is beginning to price that risk. Speed kills. Precision saves. The AI giants moved with blistering speed to build capacity. They ignored precision — precision about return timelines, about debt sustainability, about the fragility of centralized supply chains. The bond market is now demanding that they slow down and pay for their haste. This is the same cycle we saw in DeFi in 2022: borrowed capital chasing yield in an opaque structure, followed by a repricing when the music stopped. The instruments are different — CDS instead of governance tokens — but the dynamic is identical. Hubris repays in spreads. Contrarian Angle: Some analysts argue that CDS levels for these giants remain low in absolute terms. Oracle’s 215 bps is still far below the 500+ bps of junk-rated credits.
