But on-chain data reveals a counter-narrative: the growth is inflation-driven, not volume-driven. Fuel costs elevated the average ticket size. Promotional spending might be pulling forward demand. And tax refunds are a one-time boost. On-chain, we see a similar illusion: transaction value in USD rose partly because ETH price increased from $3,000 to $3,800 during the quarter. Adjusting for native token prices, the real number of on-chain actions (transfers, swaps) grew only modestly.
More importantly, Visa's growth is a lagging indicator of consumer debt. Credit card debt in the US hit a record $1.1 trillion in early 2024. Higher transaction volumes might signal more borrowing, not more wealth. On-chain, we can't directly see debt, but we can track liquidation events on lending protocols like Aave and Compound. Those events spiked in April 2024 during a market dip—suggesting leveraged positions were stressed. The correlation between Visa volume and on-chain liquidations is weak, but the scar is there: consumers and crypto users alike are stretching their balance sheets.
The contrarian take: Visa's CFO is right about the numbers, but the quality of growth is suspect.
